This forces the body to start using fat reserves for energy instead of food.

For this reason, it’s important to eat regularly throughout the day.

If you want to relieve painful periods, try eating a healthy breakfast with foods like eggs or whole grains that are high in protein.

6. Eating a lot of sugar and processed foods

Let’s face it:

Sugar and processed foods don’t help at all with period cramps.

In fact, it makes your period pain worse.

This is because sugar and processed foods cause blood glucose levels to spike, which in turn causes insulin spikes.

These insulin peaks are responsible for the cramps you feel during PMS (premenstrual syndrome).

They can also make you moody or even make it hard to concentrate on anything else other than your painful period.

Therefore, you should try to avoid eating too many sugary and processed foods during the week before your period.

Instead, eat whole grains and lots of vegetables, which will help keep blood glucose levels stable throughout the day.

7. Smoking

This habit causes increased blood pressure, which puts added stress on the circulatory system.

Smoking also causes you to have an irregular menstrual cycle – sometimes making your periods shorter or longer than normal.

This can increase PMS symptoms and make the pain worse during menstruation itself.

It’s never too late to quit smoking!

8. Drinking too much alcohol

Another habit to avoid is drinking too much alcohol.

Alcohol can cause dehydration.

When you are dehydrated, your blood vessels constrict.

This restricts the flow of oxygen and nutrients to your uterus – which means that it can’t relax or contract as easily during menstruation.

Alcohol also increases estrogen levels in the body – which can have negative effects on hormone-related painful periods for some women.

So try to cut down on the booze in general!

If you find it hard, or if you think that your alcohol consumption is already low enough, then at least avoid drinking during your period.
