You might have heard about the warning signs of taking drugs with certain food items. Your dietary habits cause harmful effects when combined with certain medications. The drug-food interactions cause undesirable effects. 

The medications may not produce positive effects. However, their combination with the food or beverages may worsen the existing condition. It may also prevent the absorption of essential nutrients in the body.  

We at Mayor Boss did some research and gathered some of the common foods that interact with medications and must avoid them. 

1. Grapefruit juice

The drug interaction with grapefruit juice is common. Researchers suggest that juice and fruit pulp and its extract also alter drug metabolism and interact with it. 

Additionally, the fruit concentrates, and even its jams or sauces have an impact. 

2. Calcium-rich foods

Dairy food items like butter, yogurt, milk, and cheese commonly show the interaction with some medications, especially antibiotics. These calcium-rich foods bind with the antibiotics and develop the insoluble substance on the small intestine or stomach’s upper portion and hinder the absorption.

2. Leafy green vegetables 

The intake of leafy green vegetables and anticoagulants is not advisable. These vegetables are rich in vitamin K, and many patients who take both in combination may come across stoke or other bleeding complications.  

3. Aged cheeses 

The tyramine-rich foods in combination with the antidepressants are highly harmful. Tyramine amino acids regulate blood pressure and, in combination, lead to the hypertensive crisis. 

What are the high tyramine foods? Aged cheeses, brewer’s yeast, certain wine, and beans are the common food items. 

4. Bananas 

Bananas are a rich potassium source that lower the risk of heart disorders, stroke, and cancer. 

However, if a person is on ACE inhibitors, their intake may cause hyperkalemia (rise in potassium levels) and elevate heart palpitations. The condition gets severe in individuals with impaired renal function. 

5. High fiber foods

Dietary fiber present in fruits and vegetables is the powerhouse of nutrients. It has been used to combat diabetes and heart issues. 

Fiber-rich foods also help to maintain a healthy weight and avoid constipation. Despite all the benefits, the fibers affect the drug metabolism rate and reduce prescribed antibiotics’ blood levels. 

6. Activated charcoal 

The powdered form of activated charcoal is commonly used while cooking. It helps to turn the food in black color. You must be cautious while taking the activated charcoal. 

It is a good absorbent that detoxifies the body or skin. But the regular high use of activated charcoal affects the absorption of the drug. Commonly activated charcoal lowers the effect of oral contraceptives. 

7. Alcohol containing beverages 

Mostly medications labels’ avoid the alcohol intake while taking medications’. The consumption of only one glass of wine can cause serious negative effects. 

You feel drowsy and less focused after drinking alcohol; however, its intake of the drugs can cause further complications. The common symptoms of drug alcohol interaction are nausea, vomiting, tingling sensations, headache, and increased palpitations. 

8. Caffeinated drinks 

Do you start your morning with a cup of black tea or coffee? Well, you must be cautious because the combination of caffeinated beverages with anti-anxiety or asthma medications increases the risk of interaction and cause sleeplessness and restlessness.    

Final thoughts 

Taking a new medication may need changes in your lifestyle. You need to be careful in your dietary choices. During a drug-food interaction, a certain nutrient in the food interferes with the drug metabolism, increasing or lowering the effect of the drug in the body.  

You should seek the recommendations of the pharmacist while taking the medications. He may adjust your medicines and keep you safe from harmful drug-food interactions.
