Working for God is an essential part of being a true believer in Jesus Christ.
If you want to learn how to work for God, then this is the article for you.
In life, we constantly think that we ought to work in ministry or in a church to do God’s work, but that is not entirely true.
You can work for God through most industries
Any choice we make in life, including our career choice, should revolve around the fact that we do it to glorify God first and foremost.
As 1 Corinthians 10:31 states:
So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.
Examples of how to work for God:
- You could be an accountant: you could apply biblical wisdom when it comes to finances and help someone or lead them to Jesus through that wisdom.
- If you are an athlete: you can be God’s ambassador by relying on His strength and showing that in your practice and in your performance.
- As a beautician or a hairdresser: you could share the Gospel with your clients instead of gossiping.
- If you are a dancer: you could dance to Christian music artists.
- As healthcare workers: you can pray with patients and encourage them with scriptures.

There are so many ways to work for God but do we know the general job?
This can be found in Matthew 28:18-20:
“Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
This is the general call to all Christian people.
All who believe in Christ Jesus cannot live for themselves anymore, but everything we do, we do it to help build the kingdom of God.
Before doing anything, you need to reflect and ask yourself:
- Who am I doing this for?
- Are you doing it for yourself?
- For your family?
Because according to the Bible.
Placing anything else on the throne of your heart is idolatry.
In fact, only God deserves that position in your life.
“God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” ~ John Piper

What does it mean to work for God?
Working for God means rejecting things that don’t line up with biblical principles.
You also can’t work with people that contradict your morals.
Example 1: Investing in a business like the adult industry contradicts Christian values.
Example 2: Working for industries that support addiction like gambling, alcoholism, prostitution goes against all we as Christians stand for.
God has called us to be transformed, and that means we can not conform to the workings of the world (Romans 12:1-2).
As 1 Peter 2:9 explains:
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.”
We are called to be different, to be set apart, to be different.
If the world has an issue with that, so be it, but we are not compromisers.
We are outcasts that belong to a new civilization, a new Kingdom with the most powerful King throughout all time.
Always remember: Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters (Colossians 3:23 NIV)
