Sciatica is well-known for causing unpleasant lower back pain that can trickle down to your feet.

Pain affecting the back, hip, and outer side of the leg, is caused by compression of a spinal nerve root in the lower back, often owing to degeneration of an intervertebral disc.
In simple words:
“Sciatica” represents the condition affecting your sciatic nerve, which is the largest and longest nerve in your body.
The sciatic nerve starts: from your spinal cord, goes through your hips and buttocks, and then down each of your legs.
When your sciatic nerve becomes irritated or pinched, it can create a sharp pain in your lower back that radiates to the hip, buttocks, leg, or even your toes.

It is advised to see a doctor if you have one or more of the following symptoms:
- Lower back pain is associated with pain in a lower limb
- Numbness and muscle weakness in the leg and foot
- Tingling pins and needles sensation in the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with movement
- Aching or burning pain in the buttocks
- Constant feeling of coldness in the affected leg

- Lie flat on your back, lift your legs and place your lower legs on a chair. This relieves and stretches your lumbar region.
- You can also take pain relief medication
- Apply heat and cold therapy: switch between heat and cold packs to immediate relieve sciatic nerve pain
- A hot bath can ease muscle pain: It is advisable to soak in the tub for at least 30 minutes.

To prevent sciatica, the best measures that you can take are:
- Always avoid sitting for a long duration
- When standing: maintain good posture, such as standing straight with your shoulders back
- When sitting: sit straight, leaning on the back of the chair, and keeps your feet on the floor
- Do regular stretching exercises: to maintain flexibility and muscle strength
- When driving a car: it is necessary to modify the seat to align with your lumbar spine.
