Acid Reflux

Acid reflux is when stomach acid moves back up into your esophagus. This backward flow is known as “reflux.” When it happens frequently, it’s typically diagnosed as Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

The main symptom is a burning sensation in your chest, known as heartburn. This usually occurs after eating, in the evening, or when lying down or even bending over. Other symptoms may include a sour or bitter taste in your mouth, bloating, burping, dysphagia (difficulty swallowing), or even chronic cough.

Factors that may specifically contribute to acid reflux include obesity, smoking, certain foods and drinks, stress, and certain medications. Various treatments can help manage the symptoms, ranging from lifestyle changes to over-the-counter or prescribed medications to more invasive procedures in severe cases.
