The 7 Things God Hates

The Bible tells us that God is love. But there are also things He strongly disapproves of—actions and attitudes that go against His holiness and justice. In Proverbs 6:16–19, Scripture lists seven things God hates. “There are six things the Lord hates- no, seven things he detests:  haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong,  a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord in a family.” These behaviors not only hurt others but also damage our relationship with God.

Let’s explore these seven things God hates.

1. Proud Eyes (A Proud Look)

God hates pride. Pride causes us to think we’re better than others. It leads us to look down on people, to act as if we don’t need help—not even from God. This attitude makes it hard for us to listen, to grow, and to love others with humility.

Pride was the first sin, even before Adam and Eve. Satan was cast out of heaven because of pride. When we allow pride to take root, it blinds us to truth. God values humility, not arrogance.

“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6

2. A Lying Tongue

God is truth, and He wants His people to speak truth. A lying tongue breaks trust and creates confusion. Even small lies can lead to big consequences. Lies destroy friendships, families, and reputations.

Lying is often used to cover up wrongdoing, but God sees all. He calls us to be honest—even when it’s hard. Truth brings light and peace. Lies bring darkness.

3. Hands That Shed Innocent Blood

God values life. When someone harms or kills the innocent, it deeply grieves His heart. This doesn’t only apply to physical violence—it also includes cruel actions that destroy someone’s life, reputation, or safety.

Innocent blood includes the unborn, the defenseless, and anyone harmed unfairly. God calls us to protect life, not destroy it.

4. A Heart That Plots Wicked Schemes

The heart is the center of our thoughts and desires. When someone uses their mind to plan evil—whether to cheat, steal, harm, or deceive—it deeply offends God.

This kind of behavior is intentional. It’s not a mistake—it’s a choice to do wrong. God wants our hearts to love what is right, not to plot against others.

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” – Proverbs 4:23

5. Feet That Are Quick to Rush Into Evil

God watches not only what we think, but also what we do. When someone is quick to join in wrong actions—without thinking, without care—they show a heart that leans toward sin.

This could be running to gossip, joining in harmful behavior, or taking part in anything clearly wrong. God calls us to pause, think, and walk in righteousness. Not every path is worth taking.

6. A False Witness Who Speaks Lies

This goes beyond simple lying. A false witness lies about others, especially when serious decisions are involved. This kind of lie can damage someone’s life or freedom.

In ancient times, false witnesses could cost someone their life. Today, it can ruin jobs, families, or someone’s good name. God calls for justice and fairness. He hates it when the truth is twisted to hurt others.

7. A Person Who Stirs Up Conflict in the Community

God values peace and unity. But some people enjoy creating division. They spread rumors, gossip, or stir arguments that tear people apart.

Whether it’s in a family, church, school, or community—division causes deep harm. God calls us to be peacemakers, not troublemakers. Jesus said:

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” – Matthew 5:9

Final Thoughts

God’s hatred of these seven things comes from His love. He wants to protect people from pain, injustice, and harm. Each of these sins hurts someone—whether it’s ourselves, others, or our relationship with God.

This list is not meant to shame, but to warn and guide. God offers forgiveness to anyone who turns away from sin and seeks Him. He gives grace, strength, and wisdom to live differently.

If you recognize any of these in your life, don’t lose heart. God’s mercy is always available. Ask Him for help, confess what needs to change, and take a step toward a better path.

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us…” – 1 John 1:9
