Cucumbers Recalled Nationwide as Salmonella Outbreak Sickens Dozens
A nationwide recall of cucumbers has been issued in the United States due to a Salmonella outbreak. The cucumbers were grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. in Florida and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, Inc. between April 29 and May 19, 2025. These cucumbers were sold to various retailers, restaurants, and food service distributors across the country.1
Impact of the Outbreak
As of May 23, 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 26 individuals across 15 states have been infected with Salmonella Montevideo. Nine of these individuals required hospitalization. The affected states include Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.2
Identifying the Recalled Cucumbers
The recalled cucumbers were sold in bulk and may have been labeled as “supers,” “selects,” or “plains.” They were distributed to various retailers, including Walmart and Kroger, and may have been used in products like sushi rolls and marinated cucumber salads. Some of these cucumbers were also sold at Bedner’s Farm Fresh Market locations in Florida.
What You Should Do
If you have recently purchased cucumbers, check to see if they were grown by Bedner Growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. If you are unsure of the origin, it is safest to throw them away. Additionally, clean and sanitize any surfaces or containers that may have come into contact with the cucumbers to prevent cross-contamination.
